John Haiduk
Lowell, MA
Acrylic

John Haiduk, known as SKRIBBLES, is a multidisciplinary artist originally from New Jersey and now based at Western Avenue Studios and Lofts in Lowell, Massachusetts. His work moves between drawing, painting, writing, and designing functional objects and digital systems, all rooted in the same theme: creating order out of chaos.

Haiduk’s practice grew out of a lifelong habit of scribbling and evolved into self-taught painting grounded in abstraction and improvisation. While continuing to paint, he began applying the same curiosity to logic, drawing on his education in mechanical engineering as a way into coding and system design. His work has since shifted toward intentionally building functional structures from reclaimed objects and digital tools that help him and others move more freely toward what matters to them.

Early on, Haiduk learned that sharing his work openly helped him find meaningful collaborators. While his practice remains authentically his own, collaboration is a core motivator in how it evolves. He recognizes that many ideas can only be realized with others, and through everything he builds, he remains attentive to the people around him, seeking collaborators to create work that is larger than any single practice.

Ann Marie Hershberger
Bolton, MA
Mixed Media

Painting outdoors in an adult class at the age of 6 began a long love affair with a practice Ann Marie continues to this day. Nature, in the form of landscapes and florals, provides endless inspiration and is captured in her colorful, impressionistic and expressive style often with folk elements.

Ann Marie often shares this love of art with others through teaching and organizing community art groups such as Central Mass Plein Air Painters, Open Studio opportunities and adult education classes and has worked and taught in oils, acrylic, watercolor, gouache and mixed media collage and fiber.

Over the years Ann Marie has participated in multiple juried and solo shows and curated several community art shows and maintains a membership with the Bolton Artisans Guild of Bolton, MA. She counts herself fortunate to be able to paint and teach art full time in addition to raising three sons.

Ann Marie holds a Masters in Education from Boston College and a Masters in Mental Health Counseling specializing in Art Therapy from Lesley University and has taught in the public schools, community organizations and worked as a mental health counselor.

Gina Kalendarian
Lancaster, MA
Oil

Based in Central Massachusetts, I am a figurative painter who bridges the gap between classical techniques and the intimate narratives of modern family life. Born and raised in Boston, surrounded by a large extended Italian-American family, my interest in art was sparked by my grandfather and uncle, both opera enthusiasts, who nurtured in me a reverence for the beauty and drama of classical culture. I was a vocal major in college; I later studied art history, and began honing my drawing and painting skills at the Worcester Art Museum, and in master classes at Waltham Studios and the New Salem Museum and Academy of Fine Art.

I’m inspired by the naturalist and impressionist painters of the 19th century, and I especially love figurative painting. I have been exploring the themes of place, personality, and the beauty of everyday life. My subjects are often family members. Drawing on my background in traditional drawing and painting, I utilize photo references, master copies, life studies, and memory to I create paintings that connect classical technique, family history, and modern life.

I have exhibited in galleries around New England, including the Rockport Art Association, (where I was awarded Honorable Mention for “Woodland/ Autumn Leaves” ), Workshop 13, Fivesparks Cultural Center, Spring Bull Gallery, Arts Worcester, Attleboro Arts Museum, and the Sprinkler Factory.

I paint and offer personalized art instruction at my studio in Lancaster, MA.

Fivesparks Working Schedule:  Tuesday – Friday, 10am-4pm; Saturday 12-4pm. Hours may vary.  You may email Gina at gkalender@ginakalenderian.com if you want to confirm that she will be there.

Oreon Mode is a mixed media artist, enjoying the way different mediums interact to produce unique effects.

Oreon uses her own photographs as reference for her paintings, which seek to blur the boundary between realism and abstraction. Oreon has a BFA from Syracuse University, College of Visual and Performing Arts and lives in Sudbury, MA.

Anne Swinton
Northborough, MA
Clay

I’m a Massachusetts native with a love of ceramics and traveling. My husband, Neil, and I have taken our RV to the Southwest where we enjoy the warmth and hiking. In the summer we make shorter trips in the Northeast. With the arrival of two grandbabies, our travels have slowed down, but we love our visits with the babies and their parents!

I’ve had an appreciation of clay since graduating college and taking wheel throwing classes. My artistic awakening, however, only started 6 years ago when I began hand-building. Since then, I’ve grown as a creator and continue to learn more about the possibilities of this exciting medium. I am a slow ceramicist, and I like it that way! Hand-building allows me to spend more time with each piece – gradually building it to its final form, then refining with careful attention to the lines and textures.

The pieces I chose for this show are some of my favorites from the past year. I have a variety of silhouettes, made using multiple techniques. The common thread though is that each is something that could be found in nature – but isn’t.

Pastel

My interest in art was first sparked when, as a child, I received a John Gnagy Learn To Draw kit for Christmas. I was amazed that with a blank sheet of paper, some charcoal pencils and a little bit of guidance, I could create something recognizable. It seemed like magic.

I only came back to art in recent years, having spent the intervening time pursuing careers in technology and education, and raising two daughters. But I never forgot that sense of magic that I felt when expressing myself creatively, so when I had the opportunity to delve back in to it, I jumped.

Initially I worked in watercolor and then photography but when I discovered pastels, I was immediately hooked. I love their tactile nature, their vibrancy and their immediacy. I’ve been working almost exclusively in pastels ever since.

While the subject matter I paint varies, it’s generally the quality of light in a scene that draws me to it. In each painting I seek to capture that light and the memories and emotions it evokes. For me, the painting process is a way to connect with myself and the resulting artwork is a way to communicate with the viewer.

And yes, painting is still pretty magical all these years later.

Judy Warner
Harvard, MA
Oils, Drawing

I enjoy drawing and painting everyday scenes from Harvard and our local area. I’ve lived in Harvard for 50 years and traveled around the local towns for my work for ten years. I particularly like finding spots that have a connection to the rural past, the barns, old houses, and public buildings. I want to capture the remaining agricultural and traditional New England landscape in this area.

I try to work outside as much as possible, though I do use my own photographs so I can paint throughout the year. In the warm months I keep my painting equipment ready to go outside, and I’ve been spotted all over the local area. Most of my paintings are done in oil.

I enjoy doing “house portraits” on commission, trying to show the aspects of the house and surroundings that the owners like most. I also do “pet portraits” on commission.
