DESCRIPTION:Laurie Simko: Past and Present \n \nOn view March 1 – April 12\, 2025\n \nArtists Reception\, open to the public\, Sunday\, March 9\, 2025. 3:00-5:00pm \n \nLaurie Simko is an oil painter and collage artist who explores many subjects: primarily the natural world but also still life and  portraiture. Her award-winning work is exhibited in galleries and organizations throughout New England and NYC. She is the recipient of 2 Mass Cultural Council Grants for 2 solo exhibitions of a series of portraits of nurses during the 2020 pandemic.\n \nSimko grew up in the Greater Boston area in Massachusetts. She graduated from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia\, CA with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. She worked as an Art Director and Graphic Designer in several advertising and high-tech firms in the Boston area and was the Design Director at Apollo/Hewlett-Packard for thirteen years. From there she started her own web and print graphic design company\, called Simko Eye Design.\n \nSimko currently paints full-time and co-manages/teaches art classes with Lowell Learns\, an art outreach program for children and adults. Simko lives with her husband and has 2 children and 4 grandchildren.

DESCRIPTION:What has now become an annual tradition\, Fivesparks is thrilled to invite artists into our historic building for 6 weeks of communal creativity for our Artists in Residence (AIR) Program. DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on view October 12 – November 9\, 2024 \nArt Reception (open to all) Sunday\, October 20\, 3-5pm. \nOver Under and Through the Warp : The Art of Tapestry Weaving showcases the variety of techniques\, imagery\, materials and design processes involved in creating handwoven tapestries.  The goal of this exhibit is not only to showcase beautiful\, thought-provoking tapestries and the amazing talent of TWINE members but to also expand the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of this unique art form. \nTapestry Weavers in New England ( TWINE )\, founded in 1991\, is a professional organization of 60+ contemporary tapestry weavers. It is an inclusive member-run organization dedicated to promoting the fine art of handwoven contemporary tapestry and educating the public about the history and techniques involved. Exhibitions\, retreats\, workshops and supporting one another are key to our mission.

DESCRIPTION:Stéphanie Elkort and Judith Stein \nLast day to view September 4th\, 2024.  \n“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it\, it’s your world for a moment.  I want to give that world to someone else.”  Georgia O’Keefe \nEnchanted by the beauty and intricacies of flowers and foliage\, Stéphanie and Judith embarked on a joint project of creating photographs and monoprints that were coordinated in some artistic way – shapes\, colors\, rhythms\, or textures.  Their collaboration sparked their creativity and fueled their productivity.  Their hope is that viewers will be intrigued by the fine details\, the subtle and muted color palettes\, and the varied textures embedded in these works.  Their goal is to engage viewers\, bring them   closer to their creative processes\, and share their love and appreciation of nature’s beauty.  \nJudith’s botanical monoprints were created by spreading thin layers of acrylic paint on a gelli-plate and applying a variety of dried leaves\, feathers\, and petals.  Then paper is put on top\, pressed\, and peeled off to create each monoprint.  The prints are all on acid-free Japanese rice\, mulberry and tea bag papers.  \nStéphanie’s digital photographs tend toward hyperrealism and minimalism.  Usually shot with her favorite macro lens\, her giclée prints are rendered as matte images on fine art paper with a subtle texture\, often leading viewers to ask if they are paintings.  \n  \n

Tasteful goodies\, iced teas\, and a book reading — who could ask for more? \nAuthor Helen Batchelder is a lifetime resident of Harvard\, Massachusetts\, recently “removed” to southwest of Worcester. \nThis event heralds the release of her novel\, Up on End and Spinning\, diving into the breadth of effects families have on our later relationships as experienced by Sarah Hartford\, daughter of Margaret\, famous poet and activist. \nBatchelder explores psychology\, philosophy\, gendered perceptions\, and New England culture in the last 25 years of the 20th century. It’s not dystopian\, science fiction\, or action adventure. It’s literary fiction with a touch of mystery\, a story of loss and regret\, rage and change\, love and persistence — and learning to believe in oneself. \nSegments of the book will be read\, allowing for audience discussion. \nBatchelder has served as an historian\, lecturer\, lay sermon writer\, teacher\, and more.
