SUMMARY:Chamber Music Through the Ages with Kevin Moll
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \nKevin N. Moll is an emeritus professor of Musicology at East Carolina University\, where from 2002 to 2017 he served as director of the multi-disciplinary program in Medieval & Renaissance Studies. His publications include Counterpoint and Compositional Process in the Time of DuFay (Routledge\, 1997)\, as well as articles and reviews in various international journals. Dr. Moll has taught undergraduate and graduate music history courses across all chronological eras of Western Music\, as well as in American music and Jazz. In addition\, he taught a two-semester liberal arts course sequence in Medieval and Early Modern Studies\, as well as a course in film history for ECU’s Honors College. He is currently teaching in an adjunct capacity at New England Conservatory and serves as executive director of the Still River Chamber Music Society. As a performer\, Dr. Moll has been active for many years as double-bassist\, viola da gambist\, choral singer\, and director of various early-music ensembles.

SUMMARY:Collective Listening: Coexisting in Music (with Judith Gordon and Rhonda Rider)
DESCRIPTION:Judith Gordon and Rhonda Rider lead a mid-festival open discussion/exploration of the complexities and nuances found in both rehearsing and performing.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n \n \nRHONDA RIDER  For over two decades\, cellist Rhonda Rider was a member of the Naumburg Award-winning Lydian Quartet and Triple Helix Piano Trio. An advocate of contemporary music\, Rider has premiered and recorded works by composers including John Harbison\, Lee Hyla\, Yu-Hui Chang and Raven Chacon. Her interest in bringing classical music to unusual places has led her to artist residencies at Grand Canyon and Petrified Forest National Parks. She has served as a panelist for the National Endowment for the Arts\, Chamber Music America and adjudicated at the Fischoff\, Stulberg and Concert Artists Guild Competitions. Recently\, she has performed with Shelter Music Boston\, Castle of Our Skins\, the New Gallery Series and the Radius Ensemble. During the summer\, she performs and teaches at festivals including Green Mountain\, Music from Salem\, Tanglewood\, Harvard Music Festival and the Asian Youth Orchestra (Hong Kong). DESCRIPTION:David Russell will perform and discuss works for solo cello by Pittsburgh-based composer\, conductor and violinist Roger Zahab. Roger’s unique and beautiful style weaves together sumptuous romanticism\, “Cage-ian” whimsy\, complex but listenable harmony and a deeply personal sense of friendship. \nIn preparation for a recording project of music by one of his closest mentors and collaborators\, David is delighted to play and talk about this body of work ranging from miniatures lasting less than a minute to multi-movement Britten-esque essays. This opportunity to share the fruits of a more than 30 year association is just too great to pass up. \nPlease come join us! \nDAVID RUSSELL – Hailed as “superb”\, “incisive” and “sonorous and panoramic” in The Boston Globe\, David Russell maintains a vigorous schedule both as soloist and as collaborator in the U.S. and Europe. He was appointed to the teaching faculty of Wellesley College in 2005 and currently serves as Senior Lecturer and Director of Chamber Music. A strong advocate of new music\, Russell has performed with such ensembles as BMOP\, Firebird Ensemble\, Callithumpian Consort\, Music on the Edge\, Dinosaur Annex\, Collage\, the Fromm Players at Harvard and entelechron. Recent projects include recordings of works by Eric Moe\, Lee Hyla\, Tamar Diesendruck\, Donald Crockett\, Chen Yi and Roger Zahab\, premieres of chamber works by Barbara White\, Daron Hagen\, José-Luis Hurtado\, Robert Carl and Gilda Lyons\, premieres of works for cello and orchestra by Sam Nichols and Laurie San Martin\, recordings of cello concertos by Chen Yi and Lukas Foss\, and new works for solo cello by Andrew Rindfleisch\, Nicholas Vines\, Martha Horst and John Mallia. He is a busy performer in the Boston area\, making regular appearances with such ensembles as Cantata Singers and Ensemble\, the Worcester Chamber Music Society and Emmanuel Music. He serves as Principal cello of Odyssey Opera and has served as cello faculty at Boston Conservatory at Berklee. Russell has recorded for the Tzaddik\, Albany\, BMOPSound\, New Focus\, CRI\, Centaur and New World Records labels.

DESCRIPTION:When people speak in different languages\, how do they develop empathy and understanding? When the world is full of noise and misinformation\, how do we learn to listen and to hear each other? “Dialogues in Dual Languages: Artists and Poets Converse” presents thirteen pairs of visual artists and poets in collaborations that seek to illuminate\, advance\, reflect\, and resonate with one another. In some cases\, poets have responded to their partner’s painting or 3D object. In others\, visual artists have created a new piece in response to a poem. Some visual artists and poets have designed a new project together\, giving voice to emotion or theme that resonated for both. \nWhile artists and poets both employ form\, pattern\, and structure\, artists work in matter\, in materials that occupy space\, whether two- or three-dimensional\, engaging the viewer’s visual and sometimes tactile senses. Poets speak in breath\, in sonic devices\, in words that have duration and exist in time\, whether appearing on a page or spoken\, engaging the viewer’s visual and/or auditory senses. DESCRIPTION:Birds\, Bats & Bugs: The Underlying Unity of Flight\, Richard Fichera.  \nTHERE IS NO ADVANCE REGISTRATION REQUIRED FOR THIS PROGRAM. This lecture is FREE for all to attend.\nRichard’s background spans 50 years in the computer industry with strong interests in a number of related technical fields and an undergraduate engineering\, math and science background at UC Berkeley. His interest in birds began about 7 years ago when he retired and immediately took the Cornell Bird Biology course. \nRichard’s curiosity about avian flight was piqued when he attended a lecture at Joppa Flats in Newburyport where a statement was made that bats use a different mechanism than birds to fly and somehow “swim” through the air. Richard dug into this topic using his technical background to explore animal flight mechanics\, and developed this presentation both as a way to educate himself and share his learning with others.  \nJoin us at Fivesparks during the Birds! SUMMARY:Music is Meditation
DESCRIPTION:Age-old practices of meditation\, such as Zen\, remain an effective means of promoting stress-reduction and attaining self-awareness.  \nThis series\, entitled “Music is Meditation\,” will explore the possibilities of using “musical mantras” in the place of verbal ones in the practice of collective meditation.  \nEach session will entail two 20-minute meditation periods\, each employing recurrent musical motives or tranquil meandering themes\, played on keyboard\, as a focus for inward centering.  \nThe first meeting will begin with a brief introduction to the practice of collective meditation.  \nParticipants should wear comfortable clothing\, and bring a small mat if intending to sit on the floor. DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to join the Boxborough Birders Birding Book Club for their first meeting at Fivesparks as part of the exciting Birds! exhibit!\nThe Boxborough Birders Birding Book Club carries the theme of Birds and Birding books.  For this special meeting\, the book to discuss is The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan.  \nThis is not only a book about birding but also a reflection on human experience and the beauty of nature.  It encourages readers to observe and appreciate the world around them\, even in the most mundane and seemingly uninteresting aspects.   \nThe book’s themes and content can lead to engaging discussions about the following questions: \n\nHow do you approach birding and nature observation? What makes it enjoyable and meaningful to you?\nWhat personal experiences have you had with birds? How have they impacted your life?\nHow do you think the book’s themes of curiosity\, observation\, and connection to nature can be applied in your\n daily life?\nWhat are some of the most significant bird memories you have? How do they relate to your life and experiences?\nHow can birding help you understand and appreciate the natural world and its inhabitants?\n\nThese discussion questions can help readers connect with the book’s themes and deepen their understanding of the impact of birding on their lives and the world around them.  \nThis event is FREE to attend\, but please register HERE so we can plan accordingly.  \nThe Birds! curated art exhibit as well as the corresponding bird-related events and programs were planned in partnership with the Boxborough Birders Group.  \nTuesday\, April 28th\, 6pm.

This year we are celebrating the 10th year of an amazing collaboration and recognizing how it’s founder and all 10 years of amazing student and floral art.  Come and celebrate with us!  \nFree and open to the public\, this event highlights artwork created by middle and high school students from The Bromfield School.  This year\, we are excited to also include students from the Hildreth Elementary School. Artwork is paired with Garden Club members\, who interpret the artwork in amazing\, beautiful\, creative and unique floral arrangements. \nThis is a true multi-generational\, community-wide event!   \nBloom N Art is on view at Fivesparks Saturday\, March 28th from 10am-4pm and Sunday March 29th from 12-4pm.   \nThere is a private reception for student artists and their families\, school teachers and administration and the Garden Club of Harvard floral arrangers on Friday March 27th. The show is open for additional viewing by The Bromfield School classes\, students\, teachers and administrators on Monday\, March 30th.
