Thanks!\nThis workshop was originally scheduled as part of the annual Artists in Residence Program. \nThis is a wonderful opportunity to get hands-on creative with one of our AIR artists.  Ann Marie will guide you through her method of nature journaling.  This type of journaling has multiple benefits including appreciation for nature\, improving/increasing observation/sketching skills\, general enjoyment and reducing anxiety. \nDelve into some basic sketching techniques and color application that can be applied to observations on your next hike\, trip\, or view from your own your backyard \nMaterials are FREE! A registration fee of $5 is required to hold your spot\, as space is limited.  This workshop is open to those 15yrs+.  \nSaturday\, March 8\, 10am-12pm.   \n \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Harvard Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

When he was still a young house boy\, Marcus Aurelius was taught to read and write by the plantation owner’s rebellious twelve-year-old daughter\, who also instilled in him a passionate desire for freedom. She even encouraged him to escape\, which he did – three different times – thus setting in motion his ultimate and sweetest revenge. \nHis story\, even without fictionalizing\, is a wide-ranging\, swash-buckling tale of a fittingly just revenge set against many venues: the cruelties and dehumanizing effects of plantation life\, a year in a unique community of escaped slaves in the Great Dismal Swamp\, Paris high society in the Second Republic\, duels\, an enduring love affair\, bad dogs and violent slave catchers\, crime-ridden New Orleans street life\, and even a stint as a passenger on a pirate ship. \nAbout the Author:\nJohn (Hanson Mitchell) has been working in the environmental field for most of his life\, first as a naturalist and educator\, and then as a writer for various environmental journals and magazines\, and finally as an author. \nFor over 40 years he was the creator and editor of ‘Sanctuary’ \, the award­-winning journal of the Audubon Society of Massachusetts. DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS BEING POSTPONED. \nAs part of this year’s Artists in Residence Program events for the public\, we’re excited to offer the opportunity for an in depth discussion on creating artwork en plein air!   \nPlein air is the practice of creating artwork (painting\, drawing\, pastels\, watercolor etc) outdoors\, directly from the subject.  The words ‘plein air’ are French for ‘in the open air.’ Many artists are passionate about working en plein air and base a large part of their creative practice accordingly.  Others create outdoors periodically\, when the weather or scenery is perfect. Some artists use preliminary work done on site as a first step in a larger process.  Regardless of how artists engage with outdoor creation\, the processes are varied\, personal and fascinating.  \nPlease join us in the Fivesparks Gallery on Saturday\, February 15 from 12:15-1:30pm for an engaging discussion with several local enthusiastic and experienced plein air artists. DESCRIPTION:Randy Hodgkinson was the Grand Prize Winner of the Fourth International American Music Competition sponsored by Carnegie Hall and the Rockefeller Foundation. Over his forty-year career\, he has performed with orchestras in Atlanta\, Philadelphia\, Buffalo\, Boston\, Cleveland as well as abroad in Italy and Iceland. In addition\, he has performed numerous recital programs spanning the repertoire from J.S. Bach to Donald Martino. He is on the faculty of the New England Conservatory of Music\, Wellesley College\, and the Longy School of Music. \nIn this presentation\, Randy will discuss aspects of Bach’s Goldberg Variations that will guide the listeners through a complete performance of this monumental work. \nThis performance is supported by a grant from the Massachusetts Cultural Council.

Sarah Collins\, Marty Frye\, and David McKindley-Ward have a shared passion for the tunes\, and a shared quest for the balanced lightness and depth of a good groove. With Marty on flute\, Sarah on fiddle\, and David on bouzouki\, this new trio presents their version of Irish music\, a sound influenced by an appreciation for old-time and other groovy genres. Sarah grew up in Harvard\, graduating from Bromfield in 2010\, and is excited to return to town and share her music with family and friends. \nThis will be a family-friendly concert!  Admission at the door: $20 for adults; $5 for children 12 and under.

Wine and cheese will be served. \nKathy Elkind is a long-distance walker\, writer\, and eater. Along with her husband she has walked the GR5\, the Anda­lusian Coast to Coast Walk in Southern Spain\, and parts of the Cammino Mater­ano in Italy. She can be reached at www.kathyelkind.com. Kathy and Jim raised their two children in Harvard for twenty-eight years.  She now lives in the Mad River Valley of Vermont.  To Walk It Is To See It is her first book. \nIn 2018\, Kathy Elkind and her husband decided to take a grown-up “gap year” in Europe and walk the 1\,400-mile Grande Randonnée Cinq (GR5) across The Netherlands\, Belgium\, Luxembourg\, and France. \nAt fifty-seven\, Kathy has chosen comfort over hardship: she and Jim get to indulge in warm beds and delicious regional food every night and croissants in the mornings. But the GR5 is not all comfort. Walking day after day for ninety-eight days brings sickness\, accommodation struggles\, language barriers\, and storm-shrouded mountains in the Alps. SUMMARY:Author Event\, Anna Von Mertens - Attention is Discovery: The Life and Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt
DESCRIPTION:Visual artist and author Anna Von Mertens will talk about her book Attention Is Discovery:\nThe Life and Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt (to be released September 17th by the\nMIT Press)\, which tells the fascinating story of the underrecognized woman whose\ndiscovery founded modern cosmology. \nCelebrating the path that led to that discovery\, the book is highly visual in nature. As part of her talk\, Von Mertens will show details of the photographic glass plates of that night sky that Leavitt studied to make her discovery; historic photos of the group of women\, now known as the Harvard Computers\, who worked at the Harvard College Observatory at the turn of the 20th century—women who chose not to marry or have children and instead chose to be dedicated to their astronomical work and to each other; and art that the artist made in response to Leavitt’s legacy that engages close looking. One of these artworks is a diptych of two hand-stitched quilts: the\nfirst shows the stars above the place of Leavitt’s birth on the day of her birth; the second\nshowing the stars on the day of her death above Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, where she spent her life looking. \nBook event is free\, and open to all.

He’s also a pen name for Mark Binder\, an Audie Award nominated storyteller. A graduate of Columbia University\, Mark studied storytelling with Spalding Gray\, mythology with T.E. Gaster\, and playwrighting at the Hammerstein Center. He holds an MA in acting\, writing and directing from the Trinity Rep Conservatory. DESCRIPTION:Acoustic songwriter Emma Sullivan returns home to Harvard for an evening of live music from her debut EP\, Caverns of Youth. She shares the stage with her mother and local resident\, Erin Ash Sullivan (pictured below)\, who will share songs from her sophomore album Signposts and Marks. \n \nA 2015-Bromfield graduate\, Emma is now based in San Diego\, Calif.\, where her indie folk music is inspired by the rural woods of Massachusetts and the laid back groove of Southern California. Caverns of Youth was recorded in Harvard\, at the home of a fellow Bromfield classmate in summer of 2023. \nEmma‘s music distinctly blends storytelling elements of folk music with foot-tapping melodies.
