DESCRIPTION:Exhibit on view October 12 – November 9\, 2024 \nArt Reception (open to all) Sunday\, October 20\, 3-5pm. \nOver Under and Through the Warp : The Art of Tapestry Weaving showcases the variety of techniques\, imagery\, materials and design processes involved in creating handwoven tapestries.  The goal of this exhibit is not only to showcase beautiful\, thought-provoking tapestries and the amazing talent of TWINE members but to also expand the viewer’s understanding and appreciation of this unique art form. \nTapestry Weavers in New England ( TWINE )\, founded in 1991\, is a professional organization of 60+ contemporary tapestry weavers. It is an inclusive member-run organization dedicated to promoting the fine art of handwoven contemporary tapestry and educating the public about the history and techniques involved. Exhibitions\, retreats\, workshops and supporting one another are key to our mission.

DESCRIPTION:Drawing Lessons by the Green – All Levels\, Fall Session \nCome have fun drawing with us at Fivesparks in Harvard’s town center! Enjoy the camaraderie of other drawing enthusiasts in a supportive environment while learning and growing your art at your own pace\, thoughtfully guided by professional artist and art educator\, Mara Levin. \nBeginners will start with traditional basic drawing lessons\, while more advanced artists can work on projects in progress from home or begin new works inspired by Mara’s demonstrations and samples in a variety of drawing mediums\, beginning with graphite. \nWe will cover basic shapes\, light\, shadows\, and shading. We will talk about perspective\, texture\, composition\, focal points\, gesture\, thumbnail drawings\, and much more. Mara will bring a tablet so we can look at drawings by great artists for information and inspiration. Realistic and abstract drawings will both be encouraged and all subject matter is allowed. Students are responsible for bringing all their own references (such as printed or digital photographs)\, materials\, and supplies. \nA highlight of each session is our group critique\, where everyone joins in to share feedback and support each other’s artistic journeys. This collaborative and encouraging environment helps students grow and gain confidence in their work.\n___________________ \nMara’s Art Workshops and Classes: Cultivating Creativity and Expression \nMara Levin\, BFA (Painting) is a current member of Oil Painters of America. She has been a skilled professional fine artist\, commercial artist\, and illustrator (hand and digital) since 1979. Her recent art exhibits include the 57th Annual Members’ Spring Art Exhibit\, Leominster\, MA where her paintings won the President’s Award for “The Potato Chip Wars: Skirmish” and three other prizes. \nMara has been inspiring students through art education since the 1975-1976 school year at Boston Technical High School\, where she taught a range of art subjects\, including Art I\, Art II\, Commercial Art\, and Mechanical Drafting. SUMMARY:Author Event\, Anna Von Mertens - Attention is Discovery: The Life and Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt
DESCRIPTION:Visual artist and author Anna Von Mertens will talk about her book Attention Is Discovery:\nThe Life and Legacy of Astronomer Henrietta Leavitt (to be released September 17th by the\nMIT Press)\, which tells the fascinating story of the underrecognized woman whose\ndiscovery founded modern cosmology. \nCelebrating the path that led to that discovery\, the book is highly visual in nature. As part of her talk\, Von Mertens will show details of the photographic glass plates of that night sky that Leavitt studied to make her discovery; historic photos of the group of women\, now known as the Harvard Computers\, who worked at the Harvard College Observatory at the turn of the 20th century—women who chose not to marry or have children and instead chose to be dedicated to their astronomical work and to each other; and art that the artist made in response to Leavitt’s legacy that engages close looking. One of these artworks is a diptych of two hand-stitched quilts: the\nfirst shows the stars above the place of Leavitt’s birth on the day of her birth; the second\nshowing the stars on the day of her death above Cambridge\, Massachusetts\, where she spent her life looking. \nBook event is free\, and open to all.

DESCRIPTION:Stéphanie Elkort and Judith Stein \nLast day to view September 4th\, 2024.  \n“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it\, it’s your world for a moment.  I want to give that world to someone else.”  Georgia O’Keefe \nEnchanted by the beauty and intricacies of flowers and foliage\, Stéphanie and Judith embarked on a joint project of creating photographs and monoprints that were coordinated in some artistic way – shapes\, colors\, rhythms\, or textures.  Their collaboration sparked their creativity and fueled their productivity.  Their hope is that viewers will be intrigued by the fine details\, the subtle and muted color palettes\, and the varied textures embedded in these works.  Their goal is to engage viewers\, bring them   closer to their creative processes\, and share their love and appreciation of nature’s beauty.  \nJudith’s botanical monoprints were created by spreading thin layers of acrylic paint on a gelli-plate and applying a variety of dried leaves\, feathers\, and petals.  Then paper is put on top\, pressed\, and peeled off to create each monoprint.  The prints are all on acid-free Japanese rice\, mulberry and tea bag papers.  \nStéphanie’s digital photographs tend toward hyperrealism and minimalism.  Usually shot with her favorite macro lens\, her giclée prints are rendered as matte images on fine art paper with a subtle texture\, often leading viewers to ask if they are paintings.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Stéphanie Elkort and Judith Stein \n  \nART RECEPTION: Sunday\, July 28th. 3:00-5:00pm.  \nAll are welcome to meet the artists and celebrate the opening of our new exhibit. \n“When you take a flower in your hand and really look at it\, it’s your world for a moment.  I want to give that world to someone else.”  Georgia O’Keefe \nEnchanted by the beauty and intricacies of flowers and foliage\, Stéphanie and Judith embarked on a joint project of creating photographs and monoprints that were coordinated in some artistic way – shapes\, colors\, rhythms\, or textures.  Their collaboration sparked their creativity and fueled their productivity.  Their hope is that viewers will be intrigued by the fine details\, the subtle and muted color palettes\, and the varied textures embedded in these works.  Their goal is to engage viewers\, bring them   closer to their creative processes\, and share their love and appreciation of nature’s beauty.  \nJudith’s botanical monoprints were created by spreading thin layers of acrylic paint on a gelli-plate and applying a variety of dried leaves\, feathers\, and petals.  Then paper is put on top\, pressed\, and peeled off to create each monoprint.  The prints are all on acid-free Japanese rice\, mulberry and tea bag papers.  \nStéphanie’s digital photographs tend toward hyperrealism and minimalism.  Usually shot with her favorite macro lens\, her giclée prints are rendered as matte images on fine art paper with a subtle texture\, often leading viewers to ask if they are paintings.  \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:Come have fun drawing with us at Fivesparks in Harvard’s town center. Enjoy the camaraderie of other drawing enthusiasts while learning and growing your art at your own pace\, thoughtfully guided by award-winning professional artist and art educator\, Mara Levin. \nBeginners will start with traditional basic drawing lessons\, while more advanced artists can work on projects in progress from home or begin new works inspired by Mara’s demonstrations and samples in graphite\, charcoal\, conte crayon\, pastel\, markers\, ink wash\, etc. \nWe will cover basic shapes\, light\, shadows\, and shading. We will talk about perspective\, texture\, composition\, focal points\, thumbnail drawings\, and more. Mara will bring a tablet so we can look at drawings by great artists for information and inspiration. SUMMARY:2024 Summer Plein Air Artists Group
DESCRIPTION:This program has reached its maximum capacity. We hope you will consider another program at Fivesparks in the future! \n\nFacilitators: Ann Gillespie (agillespieart@gmail.com) and Judy Warner (awarner@charter.net). \nEnjoy the rewarding experience of creating art out-of-doors in Harvard! This group will meet weekly for six weeks to paint together in local private and public areas\, including some beautiful sites not usually accessible to the public. While plein air is wonderful\, it can be daunting and difficult to get out consistently on a solo basis. The commitment to painting with a group can be extremely helpful in “making it happen” and is also fun and rewarding. \nAll levels are encouraged to participate\, from beginner to professional\, and artists are welcome to create in the medium of their choice. While this program’s volunteer facilitators are generously donating their time to plan\, organize\, and manage the series\, they won’t be providing actual instruction; all participants are encouraged to share ideas\, tips and fellowship. \nDonation: $100 for the six sessions.  All proceeds to benefit Fivesparks. \nSpace is limited. \nDates:  Thursdays\, June 6\, 13\, 20\, & 27; July 11 & 18 (rain dates Friday of same week\, or resheduled as warranted; no session week of July 4th)\nTime:   2:30-5:30pm \nRegistrants will receive tips for plein air and the schedule with locations\, in advance of the sessions. \n
