SUMMARY:Exhibiting Artist Talk with Mardie Luppold
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 30 at 2pm to hear exhibiting artist Mardie Luppold share the inspirations behind her collection on display in the Fivesparks Gallery – Archetypes: Making the Invisible\, Visible.   \nMardie will fascinate you in describing her progression of interests and in-depth studies of ancient cultures and belief systems that resulted in the creation of the ‘Kachina’ series.  References of Baba Yaga and deified spirits dating from neolithic and paleolithic times\, the study of work by Marija Giumbutas in excavating neolithic and paleolithic matrilineal societies\, and cultures similar to our own First Nations in North and South America as well as contemporary examples in Siberia and Central Asia.  The existence of Denisovan DNA in modern-day shamanistic peoples\, such as Tibetans\, Amazonian and Southeast Pacific peoples\, among others\, will be discussed.  \nFinally\, Jungian theory ties it all together with exploration of the ‘Collective Unconsciousness\,’  wherein lies the archetypes\, racial memory\, planetary and galactic memory\, and our connection to the Earth\, each other and all sentient life.  \nThis is a free event.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Mardie Luppold - Archetypes: Making the Invisible\, Visible
DESCRIPTION:On view April 19 – May 24\, 2025.  \nArtist Reception Sunday\, April 27\, 4-6pm.  Free and open to the public\, live music and refreshments. \nMardie Luppold: Making the Invisible\, Visible               \nIf I say these images are archetypes\, viewers might be confused\, uncomfortable\, or unfamiliar.  If I say these images are shamanic\, folks might feel strange\, or even frightened.  If I say these images are Kachinas\, maybe people are able to come a little closer to them and will be able to access them easier\, linking them to Native American culture: Kachinas therein are “deified spirits”.  We all have them in us in the deep “roots of the mind\,” archaic images from the collective unconscious\, (thank you\, Carl Jung).  So\, if we call them archetypes\, it means the images are charged with psychic energy; they then becomes pieces of life because they are connected to the individual by the bridge of emotion and therefore become…living matter. \nThese are mine.  We all have them.  Creative folks simply keep the door open to the roots of the mind; going to the well to draw up an image\, a melody\, a dance\, a poem\, story\, garden\, building\, dinner…  Whatever it is\, it is charged with emotionality; sometimes beautiful\, sometimes comforting\, sometimes uncomfortable. \nAgain\, these are mine.  Each of us will have our own cluster of feelings\, characters\, sounds and words. If we call them shamanic\, then it simply means these creations are bridging the space\, the energy between spirit and daily reality. \nIn any case\, this is where these images come from\, and why I call it\, “Making  the Invisible\, Visible.” Some take a while to draw up from the depths of the well; some come more quickly and easily; some feel pleasant and some frightening.  They are a coalescence of Native American teachings; Jungian theory; Neolithic and Paleolithic excavations\, (Marija Giumbutas); which I have merged in each painting\, done in acrylic\, some with iridescence for emphasis.  They are\, in essence\, what came to me from the well. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Author Talk - An Evening with John Hanson Mitchell: The Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius - Based on the True Story of a Slave Who Sold His Master
DESCRIPTION:Fivesparks is delighted to welcome John Hanson Mitchell\, celebrated author of The Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius\, a compelling novel inspired by the true story of a talented and ingenious slave who outwitted his master. \nJoin us on Thursday\, April 10\, 2025\, at 7:30 PM for a captivating journey into the incredible saga of Marcus Aurelius—a courageous and resourceful man who defied the odds\, pursued freedom\, and claimed a victory that reshaped his life. \nIn celebration of Black History Month\, this event offers an opportunity to reflect\, learn\, and connect as Fivesparks honors the contributions and stories that shape our collective history. \nThrough Mitchell’s masterful storytelling\, experience the dramatic twists of plantation life\, daring escapes\, high-society intrigue\, and even pirate adventures. This extraordinary tale of resilience\, humanity\, and justice will leave you inspired and deeply moved. \nDon’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from an award-winning author and environmental visionary whose work explores the profound connections between human stories and the natural world. The book will be available for purchase by cash or check. \nDescription:\nThe Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius is based on the true story of a talented and ingenious slave who sold his master. When he was still a young house boy\, Marcus Aurelius was taught to read and write by the plantation owner’s rebellious twelve-year-old daughter\, who also instilled in him a passionate desire for freedom. She even encouraged him to escape\, which he did – three different times – thus setting in motion his ultimate and sweetest revenge. \nHis story\, even without fictionalizing\, is a wide-ranging\, swash-buckling tale of a fittingly just revenge set against many venues: the cruelties and dehumanizing effects of plantation life\, a year in a unique community of escaped slaves in the Great Dismal Swamp\, Paris high society in the Second Republic\, duels\, an enduring love affair\, bad dogs and violent slave catchers\, crime-ridden New Orleans street life\, and even a stint as a passenger on a pirate ship. \nAbout the Author:\nJohn (Hanson Mitchell) has been working in the environmental field for most of his life\, first as a naturalist and educator\, and then as a writer for various environmental journals and magazines\, and finally as an author. \nFor over 40 years he was the creator and editor of ‘Sanctuary’ \, the award-winning journal of the Audubon Society of Massachusetts. In 1993\, he was the winner of the John Burroughs  Outstanding Natural History Essay Award for his ‘Sanctuary’ piece\, Of Time and the River. His first book\, Ceremonial Time: Fifteen Thousand Years on a Single Square Mile\, was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in the New York Times Book Review and set the stage for six more books\, known as the ‘Scratch Flat’ series\, which examine the interrelationship between human cultures and nature. In 2000\, he was given the New England Booksellers Award for the body of his work. \nOther books John has written deal with international travel\, gardens\, and the biography of Robert A Gilbert\, a formerly unknown man John put on the map as the first African American landscape photographer. It was this book which led to John’s discovery of the man whose life became the source of Marcus Aurelius: the Slave Who Sold His Master. \nNext spring\, The Garden at the End of Time will be published. It will be the latest in John’s series of ‘Scratch Flat Chronicles’. \nLearn more about John and his work at http://www.johnhansonmitchell.com/
