SUMMARY:Birds! Exhibit Event: Book Club with the Boxborough Birders
DESCRIPTION:We’re excited to invite you to join the Boxborough Birders Birding Book Club for their first meeting at Fivesparks as part of the exciting Birds! exhibit!\nThe Boxborough Birders Birding Book Club carries the theme of Birds and Birding books.  For this special meeting\, the book to discuss is The Backyard Bird Chronicles by Amy Tan.  \nThis is not only a book about birding but also a reflection on human experience and the beauty of nature.  It encourages readers to observe and appreciate the world around them\, even in the most mundane and seemingly uninteresting aspects.   \nThe book’s themes and content can lead to engaging discussions about the following questions: \n\nHow do you approach birding and nature observation? What makes it enjoyable and meaningful to you?\nWhat personal experiences have you had with birds? How have they impacted your life?\nHow do you think the book’s themes of curiosity\, observation\, and connection to nature can be applied in your\n daily life?\nWhat are some of the most significant bird memories you have? How do they relate to your life and experiences?\nHow can birding help you understand and appreciate the natural world and its inhabitants?\n\nThese discussion questions can help readers connect with the book’s themes and deepen their understanding of the impact of birding on their lives and the world around them.  \nThis event is FREE to attend\, but please register HERE so we can plan accordingly.  \nThe Birds! curated art exhibit as well as the corresponding bird-related events and programs were planned in partnership with the Boxborough Birders Group.  \nTuesday\, April 28th\, 6pm.

SUMMARY:Bridges: Personal Narratives by Immigrant Youth
DESCRIPTION:Please join us at 6 pm on April 9th to hear from the writers and organizers of Bridges\, a publication celebrating the writing and artwork of immigrant/refugee youth. The Bridges program launched in summer 2025 as a writing workshop and publication opportunity led by high school student and Harvard resident Lena Aloise\, hosted by the International Institute of New England\, and funded by the H.P. Dwight Internship Grant. Now\, the print publication is being used to spread awareness about the work being done at IINE\, the experience of young people learning English as a second language\, and the importance of coming together as a community to support immigrants and refugees to the United States. We hope that you will take time out of your evening to appreciate and celebrate the stories of these incredibly talented young people.

SUMMARY:Free Demo with Master Pastelist Robin Frisella
DESCRIPTION:Copper Bowl by Robin Frisella \nRobin Frisella’s pastel paintings are known for their rich textures\, natural light effects\, and nostalgic grace. Drawing from a carefully curated collection of antique vessels\, vintage glassware\, and fresh flowers and fruit\, she creates serene tableaus that weave together the past and present – objects rich with history pared with nature’s ephemeral gifts. The paintings Frisella creates have an almost photo-realistic quality\, but they are hardly images captured in a flash. Each painting is meticulously arranged and rendered in layer upon layer of pastel pigment. Speaking of her process\, Robin explains “working in pastel allows me to build soft\, buttery layers that bring a richness and depth to each piece – capturing light\, texture\, and atmosphere in a way that feels both vivid and intimate.  \nRobin began her creative journey in 2000\, when a local pastel class sparked a passion that quickly grew into a full-time calling and her work has since garnered numerous national and regional awards. She is a juried member of the Copley Society of Art and a signature member of the Pastel Society of NH. In October 2016 she received the designation of Master Pastelist from the Pastel Society of America. In addition\, Robin’s work has been published in the Best of America Pastel Artists Vol. II\, The American Artist Magazine\, New Hampshire Magazine\, Artscope Magazine\, Monadnock Table\, The American Art Collector\, The Artist Magazine\, and the Pastel Journal. \nThis is an amazing opportunity to hear Robin talk about her work and process! Presented by the Central Mass Pastels Society\, as part of the National Juried Show Marks of Distinction.

SUMMARY:4 Voices in Color - Artist Meet & Greet
DESCRIPTION:4 Voices in Color\nSusan Aeschbach\, Cathie Brenner\, Margo Ezekiel and Judith Stein are Boston-based abstract artists. “4 Voices in Color” showcases their different views on both the natural world and the fantasy world. Each artist has a unique approach to creating abstracts incorporating a variety of materials and mediums. The exhibit includes mixed media works\, acrylic paintings\, oil paintings\, collage\, fiber arts\, and eco prints.  \nBonded by their shared passion for abstract work and a determination to deepen their own art practices\, Susan\, Cathie\, Margo and Judith have created a group with two other artists called the Black Sweater Artist Group. This group meets regularly to share ideas\, exchange resources/techniques\, encourage further experimentation in their work\, and exhibit collaboratively when possible.  \nCathie Brenner & Margo Ezekiel will be at Fivesparks on Wednesday\, June 25\, 2025\, 2:00-4:00pm to meet visitors and talk about their art.   \nCathie is a painter and collage artist from Brookline\, MA. Her mixed media paintings incorporate old scraps from family fabric\, found images\, writing\, sand and seaweed\,  and other plant life. She is inspired by textures\, color\, memory and meaning.  \nMargo is a contemporary collage artist from Newton\, MA. She prints her papers using a gelli-plate\, which allows her to create rich textures and patterns without a press. She works organically and  rarely starts with an idea; she looks to her very messy table for a spark of inspiration. \nStop by to meet the artists\, hear about their inspirations\, processes or to ask your own questions about their art.  \nFree and open to all.

SUMMARY:Exhibiting Artist Talk with Mardie Luppold
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 30 at 2pm to hear exhibiting artist Mardie Luppold share the inspirations behind her collection on display in the Fivesparks Gallery – Archetypes: Making the Invisible\, Visible.   \nMardie will fascinate you in describing her progression of interests and in-depth studies of ancient cultures and belief systems that resulted in the creation of the ‘Kachina’ series.  References of Baba Yaga and deified spirits dating from neolithic and paleolithic times\, the study of work by Marija Giumbutas in excavating neolithic and paleolithic matrilineal societies\, and cultures similar to our own First Nations in North and South America as well as contemporary examples in Siberia and Central Asia.  The existence of Denisovan DNA in modern-day shamanistic peoples\, such as Tibetans\, Amazonian and Southeast Pacific peoples\, among others\, will be discussed.  \nFinally\, Jungian theory ties it all together with exploration of the ‘Collective Unconsciousness\,’  wherein lies the archetypes\, racial memory\, planetary and galactic memory\, and our connection to the Earth\, each other and all sentient life.  \nThis is a free event.

SUMMARY:Author Talk - An Evening with John Hanson Mitchell: The Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius - Based on the True Story of a Slave Who Sold His Master
DESCRIPTION:Fivesparks is delighted to welcome John Hanson Mitchell\, celebrated author of The Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius\, a compelling novel inspired by the true story of a talented and ingenious slave who outwitted his master. \nJoin us on Thursday\, April 10\, 2025\, at 7:30 PM for a captivating journey into the incredible saga of Marcus Aurelius—a courageous and resourceful man who defied the odds\, pursued freedom\, and claimed a victory that reshaped his life. \nIn celebration of Black History Month\, this event offers an opportunity to reflect\, learn\, and connect as Fivesparks honors the contributions and stories that shape our collective history. \nThrough Mitchell’s masterful storytelling\, experience the dramatic twists of plantation life\, daring escapes\, high-society intrigue\, and even pirate adventures. This extraordinary tale of resilience\, humanity\, and justice will leave you inspired and deeply moved. \nDon’t miss this unique opportunity to hear from an award-winning author and environmental visionary whose work explores the profound connections between human stories and the natural world. The book will be available for purchase by cash or check. \nDescription:\nThe Sweet Revenge of Marcus Aurelius is based on the true story of a talented and ingenious slave who sold his master. When he was still a young house boy\, Marcus Aurelius was taught to read and write by the plantation owner’s rebellious twelve-year-old daughter\, who also instilled in him a passionate desire for freedom. She even encouraged him to escape\, which he did – three different times – thus setting in motion his ultimate and sweetest revenge. \nHis story\, even without fictionalizing\, is a wide-ranging\, swash-buckling tale of a fittingly just revenge set against many venues: the cruelties and dehumanizing effects of plantation life\, a year in a unique community of escaped slaves in the Great Dismal Swamp\, Paris high society in the Second Republic\, duels\, an enduring love affair\, bad dogs and violent slave catchers\, crime-ridden New Orleans street life\, and even a stint as a passenger on a pirate ship. \nAbout the Author:\nJohn (Hanson Mitchell) has been working in the environmental field for most of his life\, first as a naturalist and educator\, and then as a writer for various environmental journals and magazines\, and finally as an author. \nFor over 40 years he was the creator and editor of ‘Sanctuary’ \, the award-winning journal of the Audubon Society of Massachusetts. In 1993\, he was the winner of the John Burroughs  Outstanding Natural History Essay Award for his ‘Sanctuary’ piece\, Of Time and the River. His first book\, Ceremonial Time: Fifteen Thousand Years on a Single Square Mile\, was an ‘Editor’s Choice’ in the New York Times Book Review and set the stage for six more books\, known as the ‘Scratch Flat’ series\, which examine the interrelationship between human cultures and nature. In 2000\, he was given the New England Booksellers Award for the body of his work. \nOther books John has written deal with international travel\, gardens\, and the biography of Robert A Gilbert\, a formerly unknown man John put on the map as the first African American landscape photographer. It was this book which led to John’s discovery of the man whose life became the source of Marcus Aurelius: the Slave Who Sold His Master. \nNext spring\, The Garden at the End of Time will be published. It will be the latest in John’s series of ‘Scratch Flat Chronicles’. \nLearn more about John and his work at http://www.johnhansonmitchell.com/

SUMMARY:POSTPONED: AIR - Plein Air Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:THIS EVENT IS BEING POSTPONED. \nAs part of this year’s Artists in Residence Program events for the public\, we’re excited to offer the opportunity for an in depth discussion on creating artwork en plein air!   \nPlein air is the practice of creating artwork (painting\, drawing\, pastels\, watercolor etc) outdoors\, directly from the subject.  The words ‘plein air’ are French for ‘in the open air.’ Many artists are passionate about working en plein air and base a large part of their creative practice accordingly.  Others create outdoors periodically\, when the weather or scenery is perfect. Some artists use preliminary work done on site as a first step in a larger process.  Regardless of how artists engage with outdoor creation\, the processes are varied\, personal and fascinating.  \nPlease join us in the Fivesparks Gallery on Saturday\, February 15 from 12:15-1:30pm for an engaging discussion with several local enthusiastic and experienced plein air artists. They will share information about their processes\, techniques\, philosophies and supplies. \nParticipating artists are: Keith Demanche of Rochester\, NH\, Ann Marie Hershberger of Bolton\, MA\, Judy Warner of Harvard\, MA and Ann Gillespie of Bolton\, MA. \nBring your questions and curiosity!  \nThis is a FREE event.  \n \nThis program is funded in part by a grant from the Harvard Cultural Council\, a local agency which is supported by the Mass Cultural Council\, a state agency.

SUMMARY:Author Event in partnership with Harvard's Climate Initiative: Rich Marcello - The Means of Keeping
DESCRIPTION:Fivesparks and Harvard’s Climate Initiative present a book talk with local author Rich Marcello about his 6th novel The Means of Keeping. \nThe Means of Keeping is a profound exploration of grief\, friendship\, and the indelible impact of climate change on personal and global scales. Set in a near-future America\, the novel follows Tereza Allard and David Luca\, two lifelong friends in their forties shattered by a climate crisis-induced tragedy that claims the lives of their families. The evolving dynamics between these characters against the pressing issue of climate change provide a rich narrative ground\, exploring the intersections of personal loss\, love\, renewal\, environmental activism\, and the search for meaning in a world on the brink of unrepairable catastrophe. \nWith a narrative style that blends the introspective depth of Kazuo Ishiguro’s works with the environmental consciousness of Barbara Kingsolver\, The Means of Keeping is aimed at readers who appreciate books that not only tell a compelling story but also reflect on the larger issues facing humanity today. With haunting prose and evocative imagery\, the novel challenges us to imagine a future where love\, resilience\, community\, and the fervent desire to protect our planet become the means to reclaim our shared humanity. May our children inherit not only a healthier planet but also an indomitable spirit to prevail against all odds. \nYou can purchase a copy of the book NOW at Fivesparks.  Read it ahead of the event to allow for a richer conversation with Rich about the story and his writing process. A portion of the sales for books purchased at Fivesparks will be generously donated  back to us in support of our programs.  \nSunday\, November 3rd\, 4pm. Free and open to all.

SUMMARY:Author Event - Kathy Elkind - From Trail to Page\, An Author's Journey
DESCRIPTION:From Trail to Page: An Author’s Journey \nJoin us at Fivesparks to see a presentation about Kathy Elkind’s walking journey through the heart of Europe on the GR5 (Grand Randonnée Cinq). Hear the story of how the adventure became the book\, To Walk It Is To See It. Kathy will share writing as a craft and the pros and cons of hybrid publishing. Wine and cheese will be served. \nKathy Elkind is a long-distance walker\, writer\, and eater. Along with her husband she has walked the GR5\, the Andalusian Coast to Coast Walk in Southern Spain\, and parts of the Cammino Materano in Italy. She can be reached at www.kathyelkind.com. Kathy and Jim raised their two children in Harvard for twenty-eight years.  She now lives in the Mad River Valley of Vermont.  To Walk It Is To See It is her first book. \nIn 2018\, Kathy Elkind and her husband decided to take a grown-up “gap year” in Europe and walk the 1\,400-mile Grande Randonnée Cinq (GR5) across The Netherlands\, Belgium\, Luxembourg\, and France. \nAt fifty-seven\, Kathy has chosen comfort over hardship: she and Jim get to indulge in warm beds and delicious regional food every night and croissants in the mornings. But the GR5 is not all comfort. Walking day after day for ninety-eight days brings sickness\, accommodation struggles\, language barriers\, and storm-shrouded mountains in the Alps. As the days unfold\, however\, she discovers her own wise strength and comes to the gratifying realization that a long marriage is like a long trail: there are ups and downs and it takes hard work to keep going\, but the beauty along the way is staggering.
